Order analysis, a technique to isolate unidimensional hierarchies representing multidimensional structure of binary data, is reviewed. Several theoretical flaws inherent in the probalistic version are presented. Suggestions of possible directions for future research are offered. (Author)

Computational and plotting problems are often encountered with the Johnson-Neyman analysis of covariance procedure (P. Johnson and J. Neyman, 1936) when using three covariates. Use of an appropriate design and contrast matrix for the general linear model and the Mathematica software system to overcome these problems is described. (SLD)

Theta is a statistic which measures the degree to which a designated pattern successfully partitions a matrix of pre- and post-treatment ratings into regions typical of each of two treatments. In this paper, theta is extended to multivariate and multigroup cases. (Author/BW)

The Galois-lattice is a graphic method for representing all possible developmental phases to reach a given total knowledge via different partial knowledge structures. Algorithms are proposed for incorporating statistical analysis into the Galois-lattice method. A comparison to the Rasch model and application for educational research are given. (BS)

The Welch-James procedure may be used to test hypothesis on means, when independent samples from populations with heterogenous variances are available. The basic notion of variability is generalized from a univariate context to a multivariate context using two matrix functions, a determinant, and a trace, yielding a number of alternative multivariate indices of shared variation. Some problems in the interpretation of tests of multivariate hypotheses are reviewed. (Author/BW)

The test proposed by Brien, Venables, and Mayo (1984), endorsed by Silver and Dunlap, and supported by computer software that they developed is not a proper test for multivariate independence. A revised appraisal is suggested for the Silver and Dunlap results. (SLD)

A multitrait-multimethod matrix containing two methods of measuring 12 personality traits was analyzed and confirmatory factor analysis was applied to the data. Although unexplained variance remained, method factors and a general personality factor significantly improved the fit of a model containing only trait factors. (Author/RL)
