Xiangyi Liao; Daniel M. Bolt; Jee-Seon Kim – Journal of Educational Measurement, 2024
Item difficulty and dimensionality often correlate, implying that unidimensional IRT approximations to multidimensional data (i.e., reference composites) can take a curvilinear form in the multidimensional space. Although this issue has been previously discussed in the context of vertical scaling applications, we illustrate how such a phenomenon…

Meulman, Jacqueline J. – Psychometrika, 1992
The distance approach to nonlinear multivariate analysis proposed by J. J. Meulman (1986) is reviewed. Several generalizations are discussed by combining features from the conventional multivariate analysis approach, which seeks weighted sums of variables, with the alternative approach, which seeks to fit distances. (SLD)

Arabie, Phipps – Psychometrika, 1991
The current state of multidimensional scaling using the city-block metric is reviewed, with attention to (1) substantive and theoretical issues; (2) recent algorithmic developments and their implications for analysis; (3) isometries with other metrics; (4) links to graph-theoretic models; and (5) prospects for future development. (SLD)

Meulman, Jacqueline J.; Verboon, Peter – Psychometrika, 1993
Points of view analysis, as a way to deal with individual differences in multidimensional scaling, was largely supplanted by the weighted Euclidean model. It is argued that the approach deserves new attention, especially as a technique to analyze group differences. A streamlined and integrated process is proposed. (SLD)

Ludlow, Larry H.; Howard, Elizabeth – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1990
Two studies involving a total of 185 college freshmen illustrate the ways in which family maps--defined through role playing and multidimensional scaling analysis--offer a diagnostic means of understanding current and hypothetical familial interactions, including how children perceive their places in the family. Miyamoto, S.; Nakayama, K. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1983
A method of two-stage clustering of literature based on citation frequency is applied to 5,065 articles from 57 journals in environmental and civil engineering. Results of related methods of citation analysis (hierarchical graph, clustering of journals, multidimensional scaling) applied to same set of articles are compared. Ten references are…

Moritz, Jonathan – Mathematics Education Research Journal, 2003
Coordinate graphs of time-series data have been significant in the history of statistical graphing and in recent school mathematics curricula. A survey task to construct a graph to represent data about temperature change over time was administered to 133 students in Grades 3, 5, 7, and 9. Four response levels described the degree to which students…

Leutner, Detlev; Weinsier, Philip D. – Computers in Human Behavior, 1994
This article's goals are to validate the Computer and Information Technology Attitude Inventory (Weinsier and Leutner, 1988), a nontraditional approach to attitude measurement; and to report on a study designed to search for intercultural differences or cross-cultural consistency of attitudes toward computers and information technology. (46…
