Elisa M. Holcomb; Sarah Jerasa; Laveria Hutchison – Reading Teacher, 2026
Multilingual readers use strategies other than phoneme-grapheme and word patterns to pronounce and comprehend sight words presented in popular children's books. Using the Contemporary Children's High-Frequency Words (CCHFW) list, which represents culturally and linguistically diverse and inclusive words, this article provides resources and…

Stanback, Margaret L. – Annals of Dyslexia, 1992
This analysis of 17,602 frequently used words found that 616 orthographic rimes occurred in rime families as building blocks of almost all the 43,041 word syllables. Of these, 436 were both regular and consistent in pronunciation, and only 86 had less than a 90 percent level of consistency. Results suggest the usefulness of rime units for teaching…

Navon, David; Shimron, Joseph – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1981
Describes three experiments designed to determine whether grapheme-to-phoneme rules are automatically applied when a word pattern is encoded. Concludes that grapheme-to-phoneme translation is a natural response to written words, at least when naming is required, and that mediation by visual mechanisms can be ruled out. (Author/MES)

Meyer, Charles F. – Language Sciences, 1995
Attempts to demonstrate that a complete description of elliptical coordinations can be obtained only if the uses of elliptical and nonelliptical coordinations are investigated also. Future research on elliptical coordinations should be directed towards more full-scale analyses of the genres discussed here and other genres. (31 references) (CK)

Lindgren, Scott D.; And Others – Child Development, 1985
Findings suggest that (1) dyslexia is more prevalent in the United States than in Italy, (2) reading disabilities are strongly associated with disorders of verbal processing in both countries (although some American dyslexics also show visual-motor deficits), and (3) there is a greater dissociation between reading comprehension and decoding in…

Bensoussan, Marsha – Foreign Language Annals, 1986
Analysis of research involving reading comprehension ability in a second language shows that problems with illocutionary force, logical connectors, and modifiers indicate that many students are either unable to draw on a culturally appropriate memory schema for reading comprehension or have preconceived notions about word meaning that prevent them…

Gaskins, Irene W.; And Others – Remedial and Special Education (RASE), 1988
A program is described that successfully teaches decoding to poor readers of average or above intelligence in grades 1 through 8. The teacher-directed, supplemental program guides students to become aware of language patterns and consistencies and to apply a decoding process of using known language patterns to figure out unknown words. (Author/JDD)

Zuckernick, Howard – Canadian Modern Language Review, 1996
Focuses on how second language (L2) readers go about decoding word forms. The article describes a psycholinguistic experiment investigating how advanced Finnish speakers of English as a foreign language pronounced monosyllabic pseudo-words based on common real-word orthographic patterns in English. Results indicate that even advanced L2 readers'…
