Presents autobiographical writing as an untapped resource for the historical phenomenology of aging. Interprets the autobiography of Joel Andrews, a farmer who lived from the American Revolution through the Civil War. Argues that Andrews' autobiography reflects and helps accomplish his central task in old age, the religiously sanctioned transition from physical to spiritual man. (Author/NB)
