The second of a two-volume set, this collection of 11 papers concentrates on current developments in the teaching of reading, such as translating commonly accepted reading theories or assumptions into classroom practices, maintaining an input of structured, meaningful, rhythmic language in an independent reading program, and relating reading and writing instruction to previous linguistic experience. Designs presented for beginning, remedial, developmental, and English as a second language (ESL) programs include: teaching reading of mathematical language, using science fiction/fantasy in popular media to motivate reading, applying bibliotherapy, teaching students with severe reading disabilities and users of non-Standard English (Australian aborigines and islanders), analyzing psycholinguistically-based speech and reading errors, and using the resource teacher in the reading classroom.
