Improving Preschoolers' Literacy Acquisition through an Intergenerational, Volunteer Read-Aloud Program, Parent Information, and an Enlarged Source of Library Books.
Budnik, Patricia McNulty
A practicum addressed the emergent literacy needs of preschoolers at a daycare center. Goals were to increase: (1) the amount of time parents read aloud to their children to 15 minutes a day; (2) the number of library books at the daycare center from 40 to 200; and (3) the number of volunteers at the center from none to 4 who would read aloud to the children. A parent information campaign, a grant to fund the purchase of library books, and recruitment of volunteers addressed the goals. All three objectives were successfully met, with the most rewarding result being the tremendous growth in the number of library books at the center. (Three tables of data are included; 21 references and 6 appendixes--containing questionnaires, data from questionnaires, and samples of parent information letters--are attached.) (Author/SR)
