Determination of Lakeshore Technical Institute Associate Degree Nursing Graduates' Nursing Competencies Level.
Schrader, Marvin A.
In an effort to determine the effectiveness of Lakeshore Technical Institute's (LTI's) Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) program, questionnaires were administered to 1982 program graduates (N=45) and their employers (N=43) requesting an assessment of the graduates' preparedness to perform 39 nursing functions. Responses were submitted to a discriminant analysis to determine whether there was a significant difference between employers' and graduates' responses. Study findings, based on an overall response rate of 83%, included the following: (1) for 67% of the nursing functions, the mean combined rating of the graduates and employers was at or above 2.51 on a scale of 1 (poorly prepared) to 3 (well prepared); (2) the remaining functions received mean combined ratings between 2.0 and 2.5; (3) no function had a calculated composite mean of less than 2.0; and (4) the graduates rated themselves at a higher level of preparedness than their employers for 16 of the 17 functions for which there was a significant difference between the two groups' ratings. It is recommended that: (1) results of the study be used as supportive data for program effectiveness; (2) program staff address itself to differences in expectations between nursing staff and employers; and (3) results of the study be submitted to the Wisconsin State Board of Nursing to indiciate support for program effectiveness. The survey instruments are appended. (PAA)
