A study examined whether parents begin to diminish the amount of time spent reading aloud to their children once the children begin to learn how to read. Subjects, 395 parents with children in first through fourth grades, responded to a survey about their read aloud sessions with their children. Results indicated that as children began to learn how to read, parents began to diminish the amount of time spent reading aloud to their children. This evidence was seen as early as first grade. The hypothesis that parents no longer read to their children because of busy schedules and lack of time was rejected--most responses claimed that the child began to read on his/her own and no longer needed the parent to read for them.
