Personality Traits and Persistence among Online Postsecondary Students
Mangrich, Ashley E.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Missouri Baptist University
This study focused on postsecondary students who participated in solely online educational programs. The study sought to determine if there was a correlation between student personality traits and their ability to persist in online programs. In addition, this study revealed if a certain personality profile, based on the dominant trait, correlated with online persistence. Utilizing the Big Five personality traits of openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism, it was determined there was no correlation with online student persistence. There was also no impact on persistence based on the dominant trait. The research was needed to continue the examination on why high dropout rates are experienced in online postsecondary programs. The literature provides an in-depth background of previous research conducted on the topic of online student persistence and personality traits.
