This dissertation reports on faculty from the Virginia Community College System who had engaged in academic activities abroad within the last five years. Eighty-seven faculty members completed a three-page written survey that included demographic, attitudinal, and open-ended questions about their experiences abroad. Interviews were also conducted. An analysis of the survey items and a content analysis of the interviews found that participants were very satisfied with their experiences and strongly believed that they gained personal and professional benefits in terms of understanding other cultures and countries. Participants, however, reported few changes in their teaching or administrative behavior. Further, an analysis of variance using the general linear model did not find any statistically significant relationships among select demographic characteristics and benefits in terms of increased knowledge, positive changes in attitude, and changes in performance. The study concludes with policy recommendations to enhance the participation of community college faculty in activities abroad and to use the opportunities represented by experienced faculty members to enhance international education in the colleges of the Virginia Community College System.
