A Search Engine Features Comparison.
Vorndran, Gerald
Until recently, the World Wide Web (WWW) public access search engines have not included many of the advanced commands, options, and features commonly available with the for-profit online database user interfaces, such as DIALOG. This study evaluates the features and characteristics common to both types of search interfaces, examines the Web search interfaces to define lingering deficiencies as compared to the online interfaces, and presents suggestions for improvement to those areas of the Web interfaces found lacking. The most advanced interface features of the AltaVista, Excite, HotBot, and Infoseek Web search interfaces were compared to the DIALOG interface features. The Web search interfaces, as a whole, still trail the DIALOG search interface in terms of the quality, quantity, depth (robustness), and usability of the search system. Appendices include background information, search parameters, and output for the Web engines, and for DIALOG. (Contains 46 references.) (Author/SWC)
