Star Struck.
The Bookmark, v33 n2 Dec 1991
The professional journal of the British Columbia Teacher-Librarians' Association (BCTLA), The Bookmark is intended to: (1) serve as a communication vehicle for ideas, trends, and new developments in the field; (2) support a professional network of teacher-librarians who are committed to resource-based learning and cooperative planning and teaching; (3) disseminate information on British Columbia learning resources; and (4) promote reading and the development of literature appreciation. The theme for this issue, "Star Struck," is an attempt to link disciplines and reflect the interdisciplinary approach of much of the Year 2000 initiative. The theme section contains six resource-based units, a science fiction bibliography, a guide to resources available from NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration), guidelines for integrating the space theme across the curriculum, and a description of the production of a fairy tale newsletter. Materials provided for each unit include learning activities, instructional materials, and lists of resources. Topics covered include mythology (grade 7); the solar system (grades 2-3); dinosaurs (grades 3-4); biographies (grade 7); astronomers and their discoveries (grade 8); and astronomy (secondary students). Also featured in this issue are summaries of 25 presentations at the 1991 BCTLA conference, and articles and reports on managing language arts, primary program and intermediate program paperbacks; the Southern Interior Telecommunications Project; patterns of change in teacher-librarianship; and a learning and working conditions survey. Also included are chapter reports, directories, nine regular features, and a number of announcements. (DB)
