The print version of the first issue of an electronic journal, this document consists of an article by Samuel Simpson, Managua Regional Director of Adult Education in Nicaragua. Simpson's visit to the United States was sponsored by Pennsylvania State University, the University of Pittsburgh, Rutgers University, and the Syracuse University Kellogg Project. Topics covered include the following: (1) the scene in Nicaragua, including the necessity of continuing educational work within the context of war and economic subsistence; (2) the National Literacy Crusade conducted in 1980, during which the illiteracy rate dropped from over 50 percent to under 13 percent in 5 months; (3) the organization of the adult education program; (4) program revision since 1985; (5) current educational problems and what is being done to overcome them, including "mini-crusades" that operate at the local level and the use of a wooden mimeograph process (similar to the silk screen process) to produce basic education materials; and (6) future plans. The document includes a list of five sources of supplemental reading in English and five in Spanish.
