National Center for the Study of Collective Bargaining in Higher Education and the Professions Newsletter, v8 n4 Nov 1980
Developments in the area of academic collective bargaining are examined. Issues pertaining to interest and final offer arbitration are discussed, with attention to authority of judicial arbitrators and interest arbitrators, standards for the interest arbitrator, and public sector problems. Information on strikes in the fall of 1980 indicate no trend with respect to type of impasse issue, geographical location of institutions, and the bargaining agent involved. Summary data on 1977-80 strikes and observations on trends are included. Based on a review of tenure policies, issues concerning the following areas are identified: defining the probationary employee, rights during the probationary period, tenure, and rights of tenured personnel. Additionally, news is presented concerning: contracts and settlements, court cases, elections, legis1ation, state decisions, research in progress, strikes, cases resulting from the Yeshiva decision, and activities/notes from the National Center.
