Strengthening Humanities in Community Colleges. National Assembly Report.
Yarrington, Roger, Ed.
Based on the deliberations and outcomes of the National Assembly on the Strengthening of the Humanities, this report contains recommendations for the improvement of humanities education in community colleges. The first article in the report, "Reviving the Humanities: Data and Direction," by Arthur M. Cohen and Florence B. Brawer, provides background to the problem based on a study of humanities curricula and instruction nationwide and makes suggestions to improve the situation. Also included are: "The Humanities: Time for a New Approach," by Leslie G. Koltai; "Community Forums: A Boost for the Humanities," by Diane U. Eisenberg; "Work, Jobs, and the Language of the Humanities," by Myron A. Marty; "The Humanities: State-Level Agencies," by John N. Terrey; "Reinvigorating the Humanities: Does Finance Have a Role?" by David W. Breneman and Susan C. Nelson; and "Report of the National Planning Workshop, Community College Humanities Association," by David D. Schmeltekopf. A summary of the recommendations formulated during group discussions held at the Assembly is included, as well as a list of the Assembly participants. (JP)
