The Future of Educational Entrepreneurship: Possibilities for School Reform
Hess, Frederick M., Ed.
Harvard Education Press
"The Future of Educational Entrepreneurship" examines the challenge of creating innovative and productive entrepreneurial activity in American education. In the course of exploring these challenges, the book considers a number of crucial issues and circumstances: existing "barriers to entry" that prohibit or obstruct entrepreneurial efforts; the availability--and frequent lack--of venture capital for fueling entrepreneurial activities; the effort to sponsor and create a sufficiently large population of talented educational entrepreneurs; and questions about research, development, and quality control in the burgeoning entrepreneurial sector. A field that is likely to grow in size and importance in the years to come, educational entrepreneurship receives much-needed attention, analysis, and elucidation in this lively, wide-ranging book. Chapters include: (1) Talent Development: Looking Outside the Education Sector (Christopher Gergen and Gregg Vanourek); (2) Attracting Entrepreneurs to K-12 (Bryan C. Hassel); (3) Catalyzing Capital Investment: Lessons from Outside Education (Joseph Keeney and Daniel Pianko); (4) Social Purpose Capital Markets in K-12 (Kim Smith and Julie Petersen); (5) Barriers to Entry: Tales from a Tool Builder (Larry Berger and David Stevenson); (6) Supply-Side Reform on the Ground (Matt Candler); (7) Quality Control in a Dynamic Sector (Chester E. Finn Jr.); (8) Reinventing a Research and Development Capacity (Anthony S. Bryk and Louis M. Gomez); (9) Breaking Regulatory Barriers to Reform (Ed Kirby); and (10) Schools, Tools, and Rules: Creating an Entrepreneurial Future (Frederick M. Hess). Notes and an index are included.
