Psychological Approaches to Problems of Children and Adolescents. [Volume III].
Grimes, Jeff, Ed.; Thomas, Alex, Ed.
This document is the third volume of special topics dealing with the behaviors of children and adolescents developed as a resource for school psychologists in Iowa. Each of the four chapters in this volume deals with a separate topic and typically includes background information concerning the topic, approaches regarding assessment of the behavior of concern, intervention possibilities, monitoring methods, and other considerations. "Assessment and Remediation of Study Skill Deficits in Secondary Students" (Joan E. Kuepper) discusses study skill deficits from the aspect of assessment techniques and intervention strategies. "Sexually Active Children and Adolescents" (Susan Hatfield) constitutes an overview of sexuality and the school-aged child spanning sexual development, activity, adjustment problems, fears, and handicapping conditions. "Self-Injurious and Stereotypic Behavior in Children and Adolescents" (Susan Epps) examines both biological and behavioral approaches to the treatment of self-injury and stereotypy. "A Framework for the Introduction of Suicide" (Marcel Slaats) highlights the history of suicide, briefly discusses the theories of suicide, reviews the research, and emphasizes assessment and intervention of suicide. Reference lists are included. (NB)
