This book examines a long-running voluntary desegregation program in Boston as a model of the long-range benefits and present-day challenges of integrating America's schools. The book presents interviews with program participants who are now adults and recounts their struggles and achievements. It explores the ways in which the Metropolitan Council for Educational Opportunity (METCO) affected the lives of its graduates and the schools involved in the program. The book's seven chapters are: (1) "The Other Boston Busing Story"; (2) "Why They Went"; (3) "What Remains in Memory"; (4) "The Gains"; (5) "The Resolutions"; (6) "What About Now"; and (7) "City Life and Suburban Schools."
