Dyslexia: An Appraisal of Current Knowledge.
Benton, Arthur L., Ed.; Pearl, David, Ed.
The 22 chapters of this book provide an analysis of current thinking about the condition known as "developmental dyslexia,""specific reading disability," or "specific reading retardation." Leading investigators were commissioned to critically examine the scientific literature on dyslexia in various research areas and to write comprehensive state-of-the-art reviews. Topics of the major sections of the book are the nature and prevalence of dyslexia, psychological factors, neurobehavioral research, electroencephalographic and neurophysiological studies, genetic factors, early detection and preventive intervention, and remediation and instructional techniques. The conclusion notes that a satisfactory understanding of the nature of this disorder has not been achieved and that specific treatment and remediation methods of proven effectiveness have still to be developed.
