The organizational structure of farms is changing. Farm numbers have declined, sizes have increased, and changes have evolved in levels and types of structural differentiation. Corresponding changes have occurred in the farm work force, its socioeconomic status, family structure, and behavioral characteristics. The impact may be considerable. A cross-sectional survey of 266 Wisconsin farms was conducted in 1960 and 1970. On 110 of these farms, interviews yielded detailed information on farm labor force socioeconomic status, family structure and behavioral integration characteristics of the respondents, their wives, and children. Three comparison groups were formed: land-owning managers, nonlandowning hired managers, and hired workers. Special characteristics of each group indicated the changes to be anticipated as family farms are replaced by larger operations and the proportions of the work force changes accordingly. A decline can be expected in average years of formal and agricultural education along with decreased job stability and average income. Declines will occur in average age, percent married, and family size. Reductions will occur in voluntary organization membership, church contributions, political activity and voting in elections, and educational attainment of children. Little change is expected in informal groups and interaction, church membership, and percentage of personal and farm items purchased. (DS)
