Factors and Challenges That Define the Quality of Parent-Child Relationship in Hispanic Families within the Autism Spectrum Disorder
Janice Mercado del Pilar
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Concordia University Irvine
The purpose of this study was to examine the challenges that Hispanic parents in the autism spectrum disorder encounter with their child in the autism spectrum disorder, and how these difficulties impact their quality of life. This study is important because there is an increase in the number of adults in the spectrum who have not received the support or services they need to be successful and independent in different areas of their life. The study took place in different parts of the United States, Costa Rica, and Puerto Rico. Participants were recruited through a few organizations, through personal invitations from the researcher, and a snowballing effect. Factors used to measure the quality of life were family stress, services and support received, and how the immersion of the English language has affected the family interaction. It was found that the quality of life is impacted by two main factors. The first factor is the stress these families feel because of the lack of inclusion and knowledge from people that surround them. The second factor, preferred isolation that families embraced resulted from the lack of understanding of the disability from the extended family and other people. Services and supports were not provided to the participants in the spectrum but were offered to their children in the spectrum. Some of the challenges the participants had were in the support area, as they felt their needs were not met. The immediate family was the main support within the family. The immersion to the English language did not prove to be a problem as most of the participants were bilingual and there was no evidence of interruption in communication with the extended family as there was minimal interaction within them.
