The Educational System of the United Kingdom. The Admission and Placement of Students from the United Kingdom and Study Abroad Opportunities. A Workshop Report.
Higashi, Sylvia K., Ed.; Margolis, Alan, Ed.
This report, the result of a workshop on admissions, placement and study abroad in United Kingdom higher education, focuses on areas of significant change in the educational system since 1976. A chapter on study abroad provides an overview of educational change in Britain focusing on the issue of assisting United States students who might want or need to study in the United Kingdom for less than a full academic year. A chapter on secondary education examines the major changes in school curriculums with the implementation of the new National Curriculum and the introduction of new examinations. The chapter on polytechnics and colleges and institutes of higher education examines one of the largest areas of growth in British higher education since 1976. A separate chapter on Scotland is provided because the Scottish system is quite different from that in England and Wales. A final chapter discusses how to evaluate United Kingdom professional qualifications, focusing on engineering, accountancy, management and nursing as examples to provide a general framework for the subject. Appendixes contain sample syllabi, and information on polytechnics in England and Wales, colleges of further education, Scottish professional business associations, frequently seen abbreviations, and acronyms. The document also includes extensive sample documents and an index. (JB)
