Teaching Mathematics 5 to 11.
Lumb, David
This book attempts to survey some of the current issues of mathematics teaching in elementary schools in Great Britain. Chapter one is an introduction to the material while chapters two and three examine recent reports and suggestions for change and discuss the place of mathematics in the elementary curriculum. Chapter four is devoted to an examination of the mathematical development likely to occur for the child in the elementary years. Chapters five and six consider the problems facing the teacher in trying to accommodate pupils at both ends of the ability range. Chapters seven and eight are concerned with the influence of modern technology on the mathematics taught in the elementary school, as seen by the use of the calculator and the microcomputer. Chapter nine is on problem solving and investigative work. Chapters ten, eleven, and twelve focus on a number of matters connected with the organization of mathematics teaching in the school, consider how decisions are made about textbooks, and review various issues related to the assessment of mathematical progress. The appendix suggests some ways a local authority can provide resource support for an elementary school. (TW)
