Training for Commerce and the Office; A Report by the Commercial and Clerical Training Committee.
Ministry of Labour, London (England). Central Training Council.
A survey was made of training programs for younger office employees in Great Britian and other European countries; employees were categorized as secretaries, typists, machine operators, cashiers, clerks, and professional trainees. In Britain, just over 8% of the under-21 age group were receiving formal training; about 7% were getting day release; however, 37% of the training programs had been established within the last three years. In France, Switzerland, and Belgium most of the commercial and clerical training of young people is carried out in schools and colleges; in Denmark and Germany the employer is legally obliged to provide training for apprentices. Training programs should incorporate a senior member of the firm as trainer; a planned program based on job analyses; an induction program; instruction and practice in basic skills, office systems and procedures; competent supervision; and further education. The main responsibility for training must be placed on the employer. (Appendixes include a questionnaire, statistical data, reports of surveys in Denmark, France and Western Germany, and training course outlines.) (pt)
