The Science of Winter
MacAogain, Padraig
Primary Science, n166 p31-33 Feb 2021
One of the objectives in the science National Curriculum in England is to 'observe changes across the four seasons' (DfE, 2013: 9). The winter months can be a busy time for teachers, but can also cater for a wide range of science experiments based around the season. Practical investigations based on winter themes can hold a sense of magic and mystery that can help children to experience and make sense of the value of science. Moreover, the primary science National Curriculum has a plethora of strands and units into which teachers can scaffold and integrate their winter science teaching in a creative way. Using the seasons as a focus for teaching science can be creative and effective. In this article, the author outlines how the cold winter season can support science teaching with activities centered around dissolving candy canes, frozen hands, and learning outside.
