A study was conducted to determine if differences existed between and among the perceptions of commercial printers, printer educators, and printing trade services suppliers in Texas regarding current and future employment trends for skilled workers in commercial printing. A random sample of commercial printers, high school printing educators, and printing trade services suppliers completed a three-part survey instrument. Data for the 260 responses (57% return) revealed that significant differences in the perceptions of the groups existed in the following twelve production areas: design and layout, hot metal composition, phototypesetting keyboard operations, paste-up, combination of paste-up and any one or more of the above, proofreading, black-and-white camera operations, process color operations, combination of process color operations and stripping, small offset operations, and web press operations. Survey respondents indicated that the current demand for skilled workers was in small offset operations, hand and small machine operations, cutter and folder operations, black-and-white camera operations, and black-and-white stripping.
