Five Reading Areas to Improve Reading Comprehension in Upper Elementary Students
Jason D'Alesio
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Point Park University
Fluency, vocabulary building, making inferences, expanding background knowledge, and metacognitive thinking are reading skills taught in schools across the country. Which of these do ELA teachers consider to be most important? It is not known which of these five areas Western Pennsylvania teachers believe has the most impact on comprehension levels of upper elementary students. The primary purpose of this research project was to determine which of these five skill areas Western Pennsylvania ELA teachers in Allegheny, Fayette, Greene, Washington, and Westmoreland counties believe has the most influence on comprehension levels for students in third and fourth grade. The data were gathered by a cross-sectional survey and were analyzed to show which skill(s) the teachers believed to be most impactful on student comprehension before they enter middle school, how often the skills are used in the classroom, and other skills found to improve comprehension levels in their students. Teachers believed fluency was most effective at improving comprehension levels while metacognitive thinking was the skill in which teachers believed was the least effective. This study concluded that all five researched skills, to a varying degree, were believed to impact reading comprehension levels in third and fourth grade students.
