Child Trends, with the support of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the George Kaiser Family Foundation, invited a variety of stakeholders from across the country to attend a meeting in May 2016: "Building Our Future: Strategies for Investing in Early Childhood." The goal of the meeting was to learn more about various types of community-based early childhood initiatives and what is needed to sustain and spread early childhood initiatives in other communities. Over 150 individuals attended, including those from business, philanthropy, state and local government, community organizations, service providers, and research organizations. The meeting was unique in its focus on multiple areas of early childhood; diverse participants (e.g., leaders from business, philanthropy, and early childhood); the inclusion of site visits to Educare, a high-quality early care and education program; and informal opportunities for interactions among speakers and participants. The meeting focused on three particular communities that exemplify varying levels and definitions of community: Tulsa, Oklahoma; Durham, North Carolina; and the state of Oregon. Together, their early childhood initiatives demonstrated community-based coordination efforts at a program level, in a neighborhood, and throughout regions of a state.
