First Annual Report on Hispanic Concerns.
New York City Office of the Mayor, NY.
This first annual report on Hispanic concerns in New York City offers a demographic analysis of Hispanics in the city and highlights new initiatives that respond to the 1986 recommendations of the Mayor's Commission on Hispanic Concerns. Programs have been implemented and planned for this growing segment of the population in the following areas: (1) immigration; (2) education; (3) economic development; (4) housing; (5) a public benefit corporation to facilitate purchase of city-owned buildings and participation in other city projects; (6) private sector employment; (7) employment in city government; (8) health and mental health; (9) criminal justice; (10) city services; and (11) city language services. The programs, accompanied by the appropriate policy initiatives, are meant to serve a very diverse Hispanic community from many countries in the Caribbean and Central and South America. Since it is important to understand the differences among these groups, research will be undertaken to highlight differences, especially between Puerto Ricans and other Hispanics. Every sector of the city and all types of city services will be reviewed for adequacy in addressing the special concerns of these populations. (VM)
