The objectives of this study are several; to examine one segment of the Dominican immigrant group from a social anthropoligical perspective; to record the nature of the immigration and describe selected aspects of those social structural arrangements which reflect the process of acculturation, thereby placing it in the broader perspective of other ethnic and national groups in the city; to do so within the conceptual framework of the "social field," looking at both ends of the migration continuum; to indicate the implications these findings have for the educational system. The bulk of the non-statistical material was drawn from participant observation. The theoretical perspective of this study was of networks of social relations that operate in a social field. The center point of these inquiries were the members of nine Aldean (a pseudonym for a village in the Dominican Republic) households in New York who were intensely observed as they interacted with others under a wide variety of circumstances. By tracing out the ever widening network of interacting relationships, several hundred individuals were studied to varying degrees. They in turn were able to act as informants about many more. In addition, the research led to extensive involvements with other segments of the New York Dominican colony. (Author/JM)
