Astronomy in New York State: Competence and Challenge.
Wood, H. John
Reported is a survey of astronomy programs in the educational and research institutions in New York State. This report shows that astronomy in New York State is highly diversified; both public and private supported institutions have strong, excellent programs. Many institutions with strong physics departments see the value of growing interaction with astronomy. Outstanding research is being done in theoretical astrophysics and in radio astronomy; the same level has not been attained in optical astronomy. Most of the astronomers visited asserted that better research facilities, centering on a major optical telescope, were essential to continued growth in all areas of astronomy and astrophysics in the state. The acquisition of a large optical telescope is considered essential to continued growth and increased excellence in astronomy in New York State. (BR)
