Seventy percent of the public schools in Southwest and West Central Minnesota voluntarily participated in a study of class size and course offerings available during the 1979-1980 school year for grades 10-12. Vocational education and special education courses were not included in the study because of their cooperative nature. The size of classes tended to rise with the size of the school, but only up to a point. Only 4-6% of 1979-80 sections had over 30 students regardless of school size. Smaller than usual classes were the rule for certain subject areas (art, agriculture, industrial arts, home economics, foreign language). For all sizes of schools English and social studies/history sections tended to be larger than average. Because virtually all students took these subjects, many sections were available and administrators found the subjects easy to schedule. Schools with fewer than 600 students offered similar numbers of courses while larger schools offered more foreign language, art, and science. The information should be valuable to area educators and policy makers in providing good educational planning and services. During a time of declining enrollments and increasing costs, consideration of school and class size becomes increasingly important. (SB)
