Detention with Heart
Svaluto, Marilyn
Principal Leadership, v5 n5 p39-41 Jan 2005
In the wake of the recent headlines and research on obesity, schools have an obligation to teach students about fitness and to provide a format for students to become and remain fit. Last year, such an opportunity arose at Davidson Middle School in Southgate, Michigan, when the school decided to incorporate some of its newly purchased technology into the after-school detention program. The intent was to provide a forum for students to actively improve their health. The new format became known as the Walking for Fitness (WF-2) detention, and it provides an opportunity for students to do a measurable, functional activity while they are detained after school. Instead of detaining a student and requiring him or her to sit quietly and be monitored by a detention supervisor, the student is involved in a personal fitness experience. Students, parents, and teachers have enthusiastically supported the program. Heart rate monitors are used to measure student participation. In this article, the author discusses the benefits of WF-2 detention program to students, parents and teachers.
