Improving School Climate. Monographs in Education, No. 3, Spring 1987.
O'Neal, Donna H.; And Others
Several research studies indicate that an enriched school climate contributes to increased productivity and satisfaction as evidenced by higher academic achievement, better student behavior, and improved student and staff morale. This monograph aims to provide a conceptual definition and overview of the variables comprising school climate and to provide a model for climate improvement. After an introductory first chapter, chapter 2 includes a selective literature review focused on effective schools research. Chapter 3 defines climate as the combination of eight variables: (1) clear school mission, (2) safe and well-ordered learning environment, (3) expectations for success, (4) high morale, (5) effective instructional leadership, (6) quality classroom instruction, (7) monitoring of student progress, and (8) positive home-school relations. Chapter 4 presents the Diagnostic Inventory for School Climate and the Diagnostic Inventory for School System Climate, with explanations of scoring procedures and profile development. The next chapter provides a detailed process for planning school climate improvement, while the final chapter summarizes the monograph. Changing school climate is seen as a difficult task, with benefits well worth the careful analysis and coordinated planning efforts required. References appear at the end of most chapters and several appendices detailing the diagnostic inventories are included. (MLH)
