Addressing the Transition Needs of Youth with Disabilities through the WIA System. Information Brief.
Luecking, Richard G.; Crane, Kelli
This information brief examines use of the Workforce Investment Act (WIA) of 1998 to address the transition needs of youth with disabilities. WIA funds a range of training, career development, and job placement services for diverse clients in one-stop centers. WIA contains specific provisions that support the participation of youth with disabilities. A table identifies 10 transition enhancements offered through WIA programs, among which are additional and convenient sources of career development information, expanded opportunities for work-based learning and jobs, and customized job training and career support services. The need for WIA programs to identify, accommodate, and respond to the range of needs of students with disabilities is stressed, as is the importance of designing WIA service models according to principles of universal access. Eleven action steps for full access to WIA youth employment programs by youth with disabilities stress close cooperation between school transition staff and the local one-stop center. (DB)
