These profiles of Adult Education for the Homeless programs funded by the McKinney Homeless Assistance Act are compiled from final reports submitted to the Division of Adult Education and Literacy, U.S. Department of Education, by the 50 states and from site visits by division staff. Data are reported for varying lengths of time for the first year of operation, really a 15-month period beginning in the summer of 1988 and extending to the fall of 1989. An executive summary offers a broad overview of the programs, outcomes, and recommendations for the future. State information is provided alphabetically by state. The information provided for each state includes some or all of the following: amount of grant expended (and percentage); number served; expenditures per learner; significant achievements; reason for leaving the program; educational techniques; and barriers to success.
