The objectives of the Alabama Public Library Service are to: provide library services to the citizens directly or through local libraries; provide library services for those with special needs through the Regional Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped; provide library services to employees of the State of Alabama to meet their work-related information needs; assist in establishing cooperative library services and networks; provide continuing education opportunities for librarians; and provide consulting services to public libraries. To accomplish these established objectives, the agency provides services to individuals, libraries, and institutions through its divisions: Office of the Director; Evaluation and Research; Administrative Services; Networking, Planning and Development; Regional Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped; Information Services; Technical Services; and Automated Services. The Agency is responsible for the administration and distribution of state aid for public libraries and an annual competitive grant program under the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA). Following a description of the Agency departments and divisions, Agency highlights, by division, are presented for fiscal year 2000. State aid and LSTA totals for 2000 are listed at the end of the report. (AEF)
