The Turtlie and The Teacher: A Dialogue Between Poets and Students.
Norris, Ruby Lee, Ed.
This document is a partial record of the interaction between three poets, Michael Mott, Dabney Stuart, and Sylvia Wilkinson, and the students of elementary, middle, and secondary schools in metropolitan Richmond and the surrounding area. The objectives of the program were: to lead students to believe that their personal thoughts and feelings are unique and worthwhile; to create a climate in which students can share their writing with others, professionals and peers; to provide incentives for reading--reading other students' work, reading the poet-in-the-classroom's work, reading poetry of other poets; and to encourage students to search for facts in order to write more about a subject. The book is divided into three main sections--one for each poet. Included in each section are a vita of the poet, the poet's comments about writing, and poetry by both the students and the poet. The section "Responses" is devoted to student poetry. A listing of teachers and schools cooperating in this program is included. (LL)
