Leaders Needed: Bosses Need Not Apply
Slosson, James
Principal Leadership, v4 n8 p43-46 Apr 2004
Most states have high stakes tests in place and the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), with adequate yearly progress requirements, is tightening the screws on the whole system. No part of public education, however, is going to feel the stress more than the high schools and high school principals. When students who have passing grades and have accumulated enough credits do not graduate because of low test scores, the lawsuits will start rolling in. While the whole system puts on a brave face, everybody knows that the ESEA provisions are draconian and include replacing staff members, which means the principals go before the teachers go--the superintendents might go before the principals go. In this supercharged environment, leaders will do a lot better than bosses. In this article, the author discusses the Lunch-Bucket Leadership Scale, a practical and entertaining leadership scale which helps principals identify potential leaders among their staff and evaluate their own skills.
