Louisiana's Achievements for Gender Equity in Vocational Education. Executive Summary, 1995-96.
Hargroder, Margaret
Louisiana reviewed its progress toward achieving sex equity in vocational education (VE) in 1995-1996. The review included the following: comparison of 1995-1996 and prior student enrollments in programs that are nontraditional for students' genders; identification of practices, barriers, and achievements of special groups in the area of sex equity (secondary and postsecondary institutions and agencies designated as recipients of Perkins funds; state projects funded to eliminate sex bias; and state projects for single parents, displaced homemakers, and single pregnant women); and summary of the state's observed achievement toward sex equity. Data were obtained from several sources: the Vocational Education Data System (VEDS); several surveys conducted by the study's author; and student intake forms collected by VE institutions. It was discovered that males continued to account for approximately one-sixth of all nontraditional enrollments, with the largest number enrolled in business (office) programs. Slow, but steady state progress was documented in female participation in industry programs, the area of greatest gender disparity. Agencies were found to be using diverse strategies in the areas of recruitment, retention, and placement for increased participation of nontraditional students, and projects for statewide leadership and evaluation were implementing numerous activities to promote gender equity.
