This book includes ideas, strategies, techniques, and lessons for the inclusion of students with mild disabilities in regular classes (grades 6 through 12). An introduction discusses inclusion in the context of federal legislation, the continuum of services model, essential personnel, and inclusion models. The first section of the main text suggests adaptive techniques including instructional adjustments of time and the learning environment, textbook adaptations, readability reduction, tape recording, assignment adaptation, study guide adaptation, contracts, student motivation, and test adaptation. The second section looks at compensatory instruction, techniques, and materials in the subject areas of language arts, mathematics, and vocabulary. Section 3 addresses remedial instruction, with information on using modularized instruction for remediation, questions to ask about reading, remedial spelling suggestions, remedial written expression suggestions, and remedial instruction techniques and materials. The last section offers suggestions for teaching survival skills, including ways to improve textbook reading, utilize paragraph structure, develop consumer mathematics skills, take notes, and learn instant study skills. An appendix provides an Americans with Disabilities Act compliance checklist, information on complaint and enforcement procedures under federal law, and a variety of sample forms for teacher use.
