While there has been a growing focus on leadership in higher education, an area of recent interest is faculty members' leadership characteristics. This basic qualitative study explored leadership characteristics of faculty members applicable to improving learning in traditional students in community colleges. This study answered the research question: What faculty members' leadership characteristics are applicable to improving learning in traditional students in community colleges? A gap existed in the existing literature analyzing which leadership characteristics in faculty members' that are applicable to improving learning in traditional students in community colleges. This study used the theoretical frameworks of servant leadership theory and constructivist learning theory to investigate community college faculty members' leadership characteristics. Ten community college faculty members in a region of the southern United States comprised the sample for this study, and participants had four or more years of community college experience. The 10 participants were administered a semi-structured interview protocol via Zoom. The four overarching themes related to leadership characteristics that emerged were (a) creating caring relationships with students, (b) educating students through service, (c) transforming students, and (d) building trust with students. These themes provided insight into community colleges faculty members' specific leadership characteristics. Further research is recommended to explore the leadership characteristics of faculty members at four-year institutions with a larger student body.
