The Effect of an Online Study Abroad Experience on the Development of Cultural Competency in Community College Nursing Students
Nicol, Allison A.
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Northcentral University
Nurses must possess culturally competencies to effectively care for patients of diverse backgrounds. The groundwork to build cultural competence in nurses should be laid in nursing school. Nursing faculty are obligated to develop and provide appropriate cultural learning opportunities for nursing students. However, students enrolled in community college nursing programs are not afforded adequate learning experiences to develop critical cultural skills. The purpose of this quantitative quasi-experimental design study was to determine whether a short term online study abroad experience facilitated by web 2.0 technology impacted the development of cultural skill, sensitivity, and knowledge in an experimental group of community college nursing students. Campinha-Bacote's Process of Cultural Competence in the Delivery of Healthcare Services (PC-CDHS) model of cultural competence and Mezirow's Transformational Learning Theory were two guiding frameworks for the research. The Nurse Cultural Competence Scale (NCCS) was the tool selected to measure cultural skill, sensitivity and knowledge skills in nursing students. The community college nursing students participated in a series of online Skype sessions with healthcare professionals and students from Scotland, Botswana, France and the Philippines. Statistical analyses revealed non-significant differences between posttest scores for experimental and control groups on the NCCS. Based on the findings, there are several key recommendations to be made so as to appropriately expand effective cultural learning opportunities for community college nursing students.
