Growing Gardens, Growing Minds
Hebert, Terri; Martin, Deb; Slattery, Tracy
Science and Children, v51 n7 p52-59 Mar 2014
The authors present a program where students and family members were involved in a taste-testing to select the items to be planted in the school's garden at Stephenson Elementary. A simple rubric of facial recognition is used. Smiles for the favorites; frowns for the disqualifiers. With the help of the school's leadership team consisting of the assistant principal, the counselor, and the elementary curriculum coordinator, it was decided to open the selection process to the entire campus and transform this into a school-wide learning opportunity. This article chronicles a year-long garden-based learning experience that was situated within state and national standards. The authors show that the educators prepared a cross curriculum approach to this project. The USDA Food and Nutrition Agency awarded the principal of Stephenson Elementary the U.S. School Challenge Gold Award of Distinction because of the stance taken toward elevating the understanding of healthy food choices and daily exercise.
