Promoting Equitable Problem Solving with Numberless Math Stories

In this article, the authors define numberless math stories and highlight three strategies for supporting equitable problem solving: (1) The Turn-and-Tell Strategy; (2) Storyboard and Story Mat; and (3) The Act-It-Out Strategy. These three strategies open up problem solving and give every student access to a challenging mathematics curriculum (namely the opportunity to engage in problem solving), which is an essential component of National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM)'s position on access and equity in mathematics education. The instructional routine of numberless math stories helps teachers support all learners by scaffolding the story's reveal to give all students an entry point into the mathematics. The three strategies discussed in this article further support all students to reason and problem solve.
