This case study investigated a shared living space used by four participants with severe visual impairments and their four sighted children. In this case study, the authors discovered that the participants with visual impairments focused on two aspects of design features: tactile and visual. At the same time, they revealed a unique aesthetic system for the design of a living space. In the general design features, they focused on the tactile factors of comfort, safety, and functionality and on the visual factors of psychological satisfaction and symbolization. In the aesthetic design features, they were concerned about smoothness in tactile perception and distinctness in visual perception. Furthermore, since the participants developed their concepts of the world not only through their perceptions, but through the logic they learned from language, they presented perceptional demands similar to those of sighted people. Therefore, the nontactile design needs of people with visual impairments are worthy of further research. (Contains 4 figures.)
