Hsiao-Ching She; Meng-Jun Chen; Li-Yu Huang; Ching-Ying Hsueh – Education and Information Technologies, 2025
Despite the recognized link between scientific reasoning, mental sets, and conceptual change, the cognitive mechanisms underlying successful conceptual change remain unclear. To explore this, we developed computer-based reasoning programs with and without mental set support to examine their effects on conceptual change in tasks of varying…

Laudano, Francesco – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 2022
We introduce the concept of the "sequence of the ratios of convex quadrilaterals," identify some properties of these sequences and use them to provide new characterizations for some classic quadrilateral families. The research involves aspects of geometry, arithmetic and mathematical analysis, which converge to produce the results.

Kendra E. Guinness; Philip N. Chase; Kylan S. Turner; Judah B. Axe – Journal of Behavioral Education, 2024
Graphing is a complex and critical skill for behavior analysts. We evaluated the effects of conceptual training modules and feedback checklists on verbal behavior about graphing conventions and adherence to graphing conventions with graduate students in behavior analysis. In Experiment 1, conceptual training increased the accuracy of verbal…

Donovan, Andrea Marquardt; Fyfe, Emily R. – Educational Psychology, 2022
Children often learn abstract mathematics concepts with concrete manipulatives. The current study compared different ways of using specific manipulatives -- base-ten blocks -- to support children's place value knowledge. Children (N = 112, M age = 6.88 years) engaged in place value learning activities in one of four randomly assigned conditions in…

Li, Mingyang; Donnelly-Hermosillo, Dermot Francis; Click, Jennifer – Journal of Science Education and Technology, 2022
Numerous studies illustrate the value of simulations or project-based learning approaches to enhance the learning of science. Simulations can help students connect across macroscopic, microscopic, and symbolic representations of scientific phenomena, while project-based learning can provide a meaningful narrative and activities for students to…

Klyce, Ann Marie – ProQuest LLC, 2023
Spatial skills, which represent the ability to mentally manipulate objects (Schneider & McGrew, 2012; Atit et al., 2020) have been shown to be correlated with entrance, persistence and success in STEM (Shea et al., 2001; Wai et al., 2009). Specifically, these skills have been shown to be necessary to geologists and geoscientists (Hegarty,…

Rodríguez-Martínez, José Antonio; González-Calero, José Antonio; Olmo-Muñoz, Javier; Arnau, David; Tirado-Olivares, Sergio – British Journal of Educational Technology, 2023
This study analyses the potential of a learning analytics (LA) based formative assessment to construct personalised teaching sequences in Mathematics for 5th-grade primary school students. A total of 127 students from Spanish public schools participated in the study. The quasi-experimental study was conducted over the course of six sessions, in…

Nur, Andi Saparuddin; Kartono, Kartono; Zaenuri, Zaenuri; Rochmad, Rochmad – Participatory Educational Research, 2022
The integer is a basic concept in studying arithmetic and algebra. However, students still frequently experience misconceptions, especially in negative integer, count operations. Traditional games are activities that are often carried out by students in coastal areas so that they are relevant to be used as a tool to construct learning trajectories…

Ferguson, Joseph Paul; Tytler, Russell; White, Peta – International Journal of Science Education, 2022
Reporting on a Grade 4 teaching and learning sequence, we highlight foundational constructs of measurement and data modelling which are fundamental to competence development in both science and mathematics. The sequence involved students generating and representing measures of their teacher's arm-span, with a focus on the invention and refinement…
