Aligning Departmental Strategic Plans with Institutional Mission: A Case Study from a Graduate Occupational Therapy Program

Assessment Update, v37 n1 p8-9 2025
A university's mission and vision statements guide its strategic planning process. This ensures that the institutional goals are met, and the institution's identity and purpose are fostered and preserved. However, the challenge lies in translating these broad, often aspirational, statements into actionable and measurable objectives at the departmental and programmatic levels. This paper examines how a graduate occupational therapy program aligned its strategic planning with the broader institutional mission and vision by developing and assessing experiential learning opportunities. The programs created meaningful goals and assessment strategies that enhanced student learning and reinforced the university's core values by focusing on experiential learning opportunities, such as problem-based learning, free interprofessional clinic training, and interprofessional education.
