A Confirmatory Factor Analysis of Data from the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator.
Thompson, Bruce; Borrello, Gloria M.
The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) measures variations in normal personality. The validity of the measure has only recently been examined by analyses of the structure underlying MBTI responses; and these investigations have used exploratory factor analyses, rather than confirmatory factor analytic methods. A confirmatory factor analysis was performed using data from 582 adult undergraduates and graduate students (78% female) at an urban university. Three models were fit to the data from these subjects using the LISREL VI computer program. All models involved extraction of maximum-likelihood estimates of structures based on analysis of correlation matrices. Two of the models fit the data nearly equally well. Overall, the results support the conclusion that the MBTI measures expected factor structure. Three tables list study data, and one appendix lists the unsorted confirmatory factor structure.
