Ladders to Literacy: A Preschool Activity Book [and] A Kindergarten Activity Book.
Notari-Syverson, Angela; O'Connor, Rollanda E.; Vadasy, Patricia F.
This preschool activity book and kindergarten activity book set provide a curriculum of 114 activities to develop emergent literacy skills in preschool and kindergarten children. The curriculum is based on research findings and is intended to be ecologically valid, embedding activities into developmentally appropriate, daily classroom routines and home activities, with a continuum of developmental levels allowing for use in inclusive and mainstreamed settings. Interdisciplinary involvement between speech-language pathologists and teachers is encouraged. Part 1 provides a theoretical framework for each literacy and language assessment and curriculum in three chapters, which focus on the development of early literacy, the role of scaffolding, and program implementation. Part 2 organizes the activities into three major sections: print/book awareness, metalinguistic awareness, and oral language. For each activity, the guide lists the purpose, needed materials, a description, relationship to literacy and language development, and adult-child interactive behaviors organized into those requiring high demand/low support, medium demand/medium support, and low demand/high support. Appendices include a preschool checklist, a parent's guide to early literacy activities, a glossary, and a list of additional resources. (Contains approximately 250 references.) (DB)
